Lions host Reading and Music Night

Traducción

On March 16, Stevenson students and their families gathered at school as the Lions hosted a “Book Blizzard” Family Reading Night & Music Enrichment Club performance. The event was initially scheduled for February 16 but was postponed due to winter weather.

Exactly one month later, Stevenson’s Interim Principal, Julie Morse, welcomed families and introduced Music Teacher Mrs. Sitrick, who led students in the Music Club through a fantastic performance for families. Afterward, students and families spread out in breakout rooms for read-alouds, reading and craft activities.

Mrs. Sitrick said she was so proud of the students in Music Enrichment Club and grateful to families.

“I’m especially grateful to all our families, who made accommodations in their busy schedules so that the students could attend our meetings after school each week,” said Sitrick. “The students were great listeners and engaged participants, and their enthusiasm and effort translated into a successful performance.”

Sitrick said that it was terrific to get back to in-person events across District 45 and that visibility and communication are crucial to a thriving educational community. “I love having the opportunity to show families what their students get to do in school every day.”

Sitrick believes family events like this bring the school community together and help foster good relationships between various members. “It’s also a great chance to talk to parents and to meet their younger children who will be sitting in my music room in a couple of years.”

Gabby Manzano, a kindergarten teacher who helped coordinate the event, enjoyed creating a special night for families. “Our parents were so grateful to be invited to their school,” said Manzano. “They were engaged in the activities along with their children and families, they were reading together, smiling, connecting with their children’s teachers, it was great!”

Manzano said she was not surprised by the number of families who attended.

“This was our second reading event and first musical performance at Stevenson since the pandemic, and we have had a very positive turnout each time,” said Manzano. “I believe parents want to be a part of their child’s education and feel that they belong here.”

Ana Guzman, a second-grade teacher involved in the planning, was also pleased with the event and called it a “complete” success.

“We had families from all our grade levels attend. Students and families were engaged in the activities and read alouds.”

Guzman feels events like these are significant for Stevenson students. “It is crucial for students to see their families involved in their education, so providing opportunities for families to be involved at school is important,” said Guzman. “It strengthens the home-school relationship and also helps students develop a love for reading.”

What a fun-filled evening for our Lions and their families!
