Stevenson LRC

Stevenson LRC Specialist: Mrs. Gayle Casey

OUR GOAL is to

  • provide materials to promote the love of reading.
  • support the curriculum and Illinois State Learning Standards.
  • provide resources for students and teachers in order to …

… complete assignments,
… explore ideas, and
… find a wide variety of recreational reading on many levels and topics.

  • have our students become…

… lovers of reading,
… independent library users,
… informed users of information, and
… life-long learners.

  • work closely with the classroom teachers to accommodate the needs of the students in a positive environment.
The Library

York Center/Stevenson School’s Learning Resource Center is a library and computer lab. LRC materials  include books, magazines, reference materials, video tapes, computers and computer software.

Each week the students have an opportunity to check out new books if the previous week’s book has been returned to the LRC.   We have increased our nonfiction, fiction, and reference materials. The LRC continues to grow and expand.

The Computer Lab

Each of our LRCs have 27  Gateway computers. All students have regularly scheduled times to work in the computer lab each week.

LRC computer software programs are aligned with the curriculum and  meet the needs, abilities, and interests of students at each grade level. This allows students to learn technological skills and  reinforces concepts being taught in the classrooms. Students use teacher approved Internet sites to research subjects.

Kindergarten, first, and second grade students work on a variety of  programs,  including “Wiggleworks.”  This is an inspiring reading program that provides a variety of activities designed to build reading skills.  Students can listen to a story, record a story, complete word building skills on the magnetic board, and develop writing skills.  The students seem to really enjoy this program.

Third through fifth grade students work on a variety of programs including Inspiration, Graph Club, TimeLiner, KidPix, Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, and Power Point.

At each grade level, students are taught the basic technology skills that should be mastered at that grade. These technology competencies have been established by the District 45 Technology Committee.  In District 45, technology is used as a tool to enrich the teaching and learning in all curricular areas.

Volunteers Needed

Are you a  parent, grandparent or community member who is able to volunteer in the LRC for 30 minutes or more each week?

As a volunteer you would help check out books and assist students in the computer lab.

No experience or special skills are required.

Thank you to all our volunteers who work to help the LRC run smoothly and efficiently.
