One School, Many Cultures

District 45 prides itself in having a diverse student and staff population. Stevenson school is a fantastic example of just how culturally and linguistically diverse we really are. Behind our Student Council / Builders Club, we have Mrs. Asma Qazi who shares her knowledge and expertise as a teacher and multilingual individual herself. Ms. Qazi also runs our annual Multicultural Family Nights at our York/Stevenson Center.

Mrs. Qazi says “The best thing about working at Stevenson and York Center schools and the district is that I am part of a linguistically and culturally diverse environment and being an ELL (English Language Learner) teacher it’s a privilege for me to get to hear the beautiful heritage languages our students and their families speak. I love building connections with my students and their families by tapping their creative skills and engaging them in multicultural projects. She added, “I make sure their (students) cultures are made visible and languages are being heard!”

Stevenson school shares more than 15 cultures and languages within staff and students. Some of these countries include Pakistan, India, Philippines, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Venezuela, Uzbekistan and many more.

During the last few weeks, our Student Council has worked together to celebrate our differences and similarities that make us great. With Mrs. Qazi’s guidance, student council members created a visual representation of who we are by creating mini versions of them.
